1. Introduction

Welcome to KUENTAS. This Privacy Policy explains how Juan Ignacio Romano ("we", "us" or "KUENTAS") collects, uses, stores and protects your personal information when you use our mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service").

KUENTAS is an application for managing shared expenses on group trips, available for iOS and Android devices. By using our Service, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

Summary: We collect the data necessary so you can split expenses with your travel companions. Your financial data is shared only with the participants of each trip. We use AI services for premium features.

2. Information We Collect

2.1. Information you provide directly

2.2. Information collected automatically

2.3. Information from other users

When you join a shared trip, other participants can see your name, profile photo, the expenses you log, your balance and the photos you upload to the trip gallery.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information to:

  • Provide the Service: Create your account, manage trips, record expenses, calculate balances and debts among participants.
  • AI Features (Premium): Process assistant queries, transcribe audio, analyze receipts with OCR, detect anomalies in expenses.
  • Communications: Send you notifications about new expenses, debt reminders and daily summaries.
  • Currency conversion: Obtain up-to-date exchange rates to convert expenses between different currencies.
  • Maps: Display the geographic location of your expenses.
  • Service improvements: Analyze usage to improve features and fix bugs.
  • Security: Protect against unauthorized access and fraudulent activity.

4. Data Sharing

4.1. With other users

When you participate in a shared trip, the following data is visible to all participants of that trip:

  • Your name and profile photo
  • Expenses you log (description, amount, date, location)
  • Your balance (how much you owe or are owed)
  • Photos you upload to the trip gallery
  • Itinerary items you create

We share data with third parties that help us operate the Service:

4.3. For legal reasons

We may disclose your information if required by law, legal process, or government request, or if we believe in good faith that it is necessary to protect our rights, your safety or that of others.

5. Use of Artificial Intelligence

KUENTAS uses Artificial Intelligence services from OpenAI for Premium features:

  • AI Assistant: Answers questions about your trip using GPT-4o. Your trip context (participants, expenses, budgets, itinerary, checklist, countries visited and previous trip history) is sent to generate relevant responses.
  • Multi-trip intelligence: Analyzes and compares data from all your trips to offer recommendations based on your history.
  • Actions from the assistant: The assistant can suggest quick actions (record payments, view budgets, add items to the checklist) that require your confirmation.
  • Receipt OCR: Analyzes photos of tickets using GPT-4 Vision to extract amount, currency and description.
  • Receipt translation: Translates tickets in other languages and explains local charges.
  • Voice transcription: Converts audio recordings to text using Whisper.
  • Automatic categorization: Suggests categories for expenses based on the description.
  • Anomaly detection: Identifies possible errors or duplicates in expenses.
  • Budget prediction: Analyzes spending patterns and projects the remaining budget.

5.2. Response feedback

When you rate an assistant response (positive or negative), we store the rating along with the question and an excerpt of the response. This data is used exclusively to analyze and improve the quality of the assistant. It is not shared with third parties.

Important: Data sent to OpenAI is processed according to their privacy policy. OpenAI may temporarily retain data to monitor for abuse, but does not use it to train their models when accessed via API.

6. Storage and Security

6.1. Where we store your data

  • Server: Your data is stored on secure servers.
  • Device (online): A local data cache is stored to improve loading speed.
  • Device (offline): When there is no connection, operations (expenses, payments, etc.) are saved in an encrypted local queue that automatically syncs when connectivity is restored.
  • Authentication tokens: Stored securely using the device's native encrypted storage (Keychain on iOS, Keystore on Android).
  • Device identifier: A unique UUID is generated and stored in SecureStore to ensure cross-device operation deduplication.

6.2. Security measures

  • Encrypted connections via HTTPS/TLS
  • SSL Pinning to verify server authenticity
  • Passwords stored with secure hashing
  • JWT tokens with 30-day expiration
  • Secure credential storage on devices (SecureStore)
  • Encrypted offline queue for pending operations
  • API rate limiting to prevent abuse
  • Optional biometric lock (fingerprint / facial recognition)

6.3. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. Archived trips remain stored for your historical reference. You may request deletion of your account and data at any time.

7. Your Rights (GDPR and CCPA)

Depending on your location, you have the following rights over your personal data:

7.1. For all users

  • Access: You may request a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: You may correct inaccurate data from your profile or by contacting us.
  • Deletion: You may request the deletion of your account and personal data.
  • Portability: You may export your trip data in PDF or Excel format.

7.2. For European Union users (GDPR)

  • Legal basis: We process your data based on your consent (when creating an account) and contractual necessity (to provide the service).
  • Objection: You may object to the processing of your data for certain purposes.
  • Restriction: You may request that we limit the processing of your data.
  • Complaint: You have the right to file a complaint with a data protection authority.

7.3. For California users (CCPA)

  • Know: You have the right to know what data we collect and how we use it.
  • Delete: You may request that we delete your personal data.
  • Non-discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
  • We do not sell data: We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

8. Device Permissions

KUENTAS may request the following permissions on your device:

All permissions are optional. You can use the app without granting them, although some features will not be available. You can revoke permissions at any time from your device settings.

Note on biometrics: Biometric authentication is processed entirely on your device through the operating system's native APIs. KUENTAS never accesses, stores or transmits your biometric data (fingerprint or face). We only receive a success or failure confirmation of the verification.

9. Children

KUENTAS is designed for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete that information.

10. International Transfers

Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, including the United States (OpenAI servers) and other countries where our service providers operate. We take measures to ensure your data is protected in accordance with this policy.

11. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website uses essential cookies and Google Analytics for web analytics. For more information, please see our Cookie Policy.

The mobile application uses the following local storage technologies:

  • AsyncStorage: Data cache, preferences and assistant conversation history.
  • SecureStore: Authentication token, device identifier (UUID) and security settings.
  • Encrypted offline queue: Operations pending synchronization, stored with local encryption.

This data is stored locally on your device and is necessary for the application to function, especially in offline mode.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through a notice in the app or by email. The date of the last update is indicated at the top of this document.

We recommend that you review this policy periodically. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
